 Definition 

Cause and effect is a relationship between events or actions where one event, the cause, leads to another event, the effect. It is the idea that every action or event has a consequence or result, and that these outcomes are not random, but are determined by the factors that led up to them. In English subjects, cause and effect material is material that discusses sentences or paragraphs in which it describes the relationship between two things when one thing causes something else to happen.

Purpose 

The purpose of cause and effect is to explain the relationship between two interrelated events, where one event (cause) causes another event (effect). So that, cause and effect sentences are often found in various examples of texts, especially those that explain an event.

Signal Word 

To make a cause and effect sentence or paragraph more pleasant to read, easier for readers to understand, and make the writing less rigid, you can use connecting words.

In cause and effect material, this connecting word is known as a signal word, which is a word or phrase that can be used as a transition from one idea to another.

1. Cause and Effect + Noun sentence 

Signal words + Cause + Effect   Or  Effect + Signal words + Cause 

Example : 

Due to Dimas’s laziness, he did not pass the Math test.

He failed the test because of his bad study habits.

2. Cause and Effect + Verb Sentence 

Signal words + Cause + Effect  Or  Effect + Signal words + Cause 

Example : 

Maria didn’t follow the recipe correctly, so the cake did not come out as expected.

As Kevin arrived late to school, he will be punished.
